Oyster Ecology Projects

Oysters are vital to R.T.B’s mission in the helping of the overall improvement of the Bronx River. It’s simple for the Bronx River, the more oysters the better the water quality. Oysters are filter feeders. They eat the pollutants in a body of water, therefore cleaning that body of water. Adult oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water every day.

Since 2005, R.T.B has been involved in many ecology projects. The oyster restoration project includes our oyster reefs, spat collectors, and oyster garden. R.T.B. is the primary monitors being that our location is the closest to the sites.
