Organizational Background
Rocking the Boat began as a boatbuilding afterschool project for high school students in the South Bronx and was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit in 2001. Today, the organization, with an annual budget of over $5 million, is a hub of youth development programming that serves nearly 5,000 community members annually across three locations. The mediums of boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing are paired with social-emotional, academic, and career counseling by a team of licensed social workers to have profound and lasting impact on participants.
Position Summary
Sail Central Park crew members serve customers of the Model Sailboat concession in Central Park, one of the most iconic attractions in New York City. Members of the Sail Central Park crew are Rocking the Boat brand ambassadors, and an extension of Rocking the Boat team. The crew member is a part of the team supervised by the Sail Central Park Site Director who is supported by Sail Central Park Crew Leads.
Responsibilities
Sales
- Rent boats to the general public and for private events; demonstrate how to operate the boats and teach a basic level of sailing terminology
- Work the POS system for boat reservations, walk ups, and merchandise sales including handling cash and credit card transactions, as well as answering the Sail Central Park office number
- Actively promote and sell branded merchandise, bundle deals, memberships and private group offerings
- Effectively and proactively address and resolve customer inquiries and complaints
Maintenance
- Understand how the boats work (assembly, sail, servos, batteries, etc.) and participate in trouble shooting boats issues
- Support the maintenance of rental boats, work location, sales platforms, and merchandise at the Kerbs Boathouse
- Follow all model sailboat maintenance protocols; troubleshooting any issues; reporting problems to the Sail Central Park Leads and Site Director
Teamwork
- Aid in maintaining good relationships with the Central Park Model Yacht Club, Central Park Conservancy, Le Pain Quotidien, and other local partners to promote long-term collaborations
- Record and report customer feedback to Sail Central Park Site Director and Leads
- Collaborate with team of fellow crew members to ensure a consistent and high-quality customer experience
Qualifications
- At least one year of experience in a face-to-face customer service role
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment
- Problem-solving ability and patience in handling difficult situations
- A customer-oriented approach with a commitment to quality service
- Availability on at least one weekend day, and a minimum of two shifts per week
- Experience with credit card processing systems a plus
Rocking the Boat offers
- The opportunity to be scheduled for opening and closing shifts during the approximate working hours:
Spring & Fall Season: April-May & September-October (Mondays-Thursday 10:30-6:30pm; Fridays & Sundays 10:30-7:30; Saturdays 12:30-7:30pm)
Summer Season: June-August (Sunday-Thursdays 9:30-7:30pm; Fridays 9:30-8:30pm; Saturdays 12:30-8:30pm)
- Additional hours during March and November/early December for training, season meetings, and performance evaluations
- Starting wage of $18-21 per hour, commensurate with experience
- Up to 40 Safe and Sick hours per calendar year, accrued at a rate of one hour of Safe and Sick time earned for every 15 hours worked

Position Summary
Public Program Assistants are part-time, non-exempt positions that support the delivery of Rocking the Boat’s wide range of environmental, boatbuilding, and sailing programs serving youth and adults both during the day, afterschool, and over the summer. These include daytime programs with elementary, middle, and high school groups, and an afterschool and summer middle school youth development program. Up to five positions report to the Public Program Manager.
Responsibilities
- Assist in delivering environmental science, boatbuilding, and sailing programs to small and large groups, including rowing wooden boats with participants
- Incorporate and promote Rocking the Boat’s Core Values into all aspects of program delivery
- Actively practice and promote all safety protocols in the classroom, field, and on the water
- Manage the upkeep of the program materials and equipment including rowboats, field equipment, and activity material
- Ensure appropriate use and care of all materials and equipment
- Manage participant behavior in order to facilitate an effective and safe learning environment
- Participate in other activities as necessary to fulfill the mission of Rocking the Boat
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrate the initiative and leadership qualities that lead to a high level of productivity
- Ability to think independently while working as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate honestly, respectfully, and effectively with supervisors and coworkers
- Spoken Spanish language proficiency
Rocking the Boat Offers
- Up to 40 Sick and Safe hours per calendar year, accrued at a rate of one hour of Safe and Sick time earned to every 15 hours worked
- Salary ranging from $18 to $21 per hour, commensurate with experience.
