spotlight on public programs: winter projects

It may be January, but students from the two Bronx schools currently enrolled in Rocking the Boat’s Public Program are thinking spring.

Two dozen ninth and 10th graders at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School and a dozen sixth and seventh graders from Bronx Community Charter School have immersed themselves in woodworking projects that are helping make winter fade into the background.

Connecting with nature, rowing, hiking, fishing, sailing…all activities that might, for good reason, come to mind when you think about summer camp fun. Rocking the Boat campers have been enjoying all of those memorable experiences and many others this July and August, while at the same time learning important lessons about how to use the Bronx River safely and responsibly. 

spotlight on youth development: environmental science

This past March, Rocking the Boat launched the student level of two programs—sailing and environmental science—for the price of one! 16 new sailing students were recruited, as planned, to complete the roll out of Rocking the Boat’s major expansion into sailing.

spotlight on boatbuilding

Some wise boat boatbuilder once said “the only straight line on a boat is invisible.” Because a boat is made up of a series of curves, it is frequently necessary to bend wood in the process of making one.
